Rotarian Biker Visits On “Road to Recovery” Tour

A perfect example of Rotary’s commitment to improving lives was manifested when Jeff Molby paid our club a visit recently. The Rotarian from Caro, MI, was welcomed by President Francois Ngijoi and saluted as the American Cancer Society’s 2024 Patient Support Volunteer of the Year. He’s on a cross-country cycling tour promoting free rides to keep cancer patients on schedule for treatment.

The ACS “Road to Recovery” program began about 40 years ago to match volunteer drivers with patient transportation needs. Jeff discovered that in many areas, about half of ride requests must be turned down because there aren’t enough drivers. Some patients are left behind, especially those burdened by the cost and intensity of care. Treatment plans are strict and regimented. Missing appointments can affect outcomes.31255025700?profile=RESIZE_400x

Jeff tackled the issue personally in 2023. He describes himself as a “semi-retired, self-employed computer nerd” and minimalist who likes biking, camping and travel. So, he sold everything, then started pedaling on a campaign to close the patients’ transportation gap. He’s covered 22,416 miles so far, much like crossing the US seven or eight times. He’s spent hundreds of nights in a small tent, fixed dozens of flat tires, ruined three bikes (currently on number 4), and plans to keep going until Oct. 17, the upcoming end of the journey.

As a Rotarian, Jeff repeatedly connects his mission to Rotary’s Four-Way Test principles. He feels that meeting vital patient needs is “fair to all concerned, builds goodwill and better friendships, and is beneficial to all concerned.”  Last year’s Rotary theme to “Unite for Good” and this year’s to “Create Lasting Impact” are guiding ideals for the journey. This sustains him on days when he’s sore, tired and doesn’t want to get back on the road.

Jeff said anyone may become a volunteer driver; even offering a few rides a month matters. His website - ChemoRiders.org - has program information, social media and sign-up links, or you can go directly to the American Cancer Society to join “Road to Recovery.” Jeff believes that volunteering is often a quiet and unglamorous way of service but can be lifesaving. Like many Rotary avenues of service, volunteering helps keep others’ hopes alive through everyday compassionate action. It satisfies our need for greater community engagement.
